Beware of Scholarship Scams!
If you’re searching for scholarships and you see things that seem to good to be true…they probably are. It takes some time and energy to get a scholarship, so if you’re not willing to do the work, don’t think there is an easy way to obtain one. Here are a few things to look for when you begin your scholarship research:
- If it says “We’ll do all the work” don’t be fooled. You must apply for scholarships yourself…there is no way around it!
- If the scholarship costs YOU money, avoid at all cost! Don’t pay anyone who claims to be “holding” a scholarship or grant for you. Free money does not cost anything.
- If you get a notice that says “You’ve been selected by a national foundation to receive a scholarship” or “you’re a finalist in a contest you never entered” obviously there is a catch!
- If someone tells you “you can’t get this information anywhere else” walk away. Legitimate scholarship programs are eager to give money to qualified students. They are not interested in keeping the money a secret.
- And finally, if you’re told “the scholarship is guaranteed or your money back” there’s a problem. No one can guarantee that they will get you a grant or scholarship. A refund guarantee means there are stings attached.
