Job Hunting in Today’s Market by Reid McKinstry

It has been sixteen months since I graduated from college and I sit here today with a piece of paper and the same retail job I’ve had for the last five years.  The job market is tough and it seems like every position out there is some sort of scam.  So I had to ask myself whether I was prepared to make a sacrifice in the job I took or if I could afford to wait it out for the right position.  Since my current job gets me by financially, I have chosen to wait out the market for the best-fit position.  I realize that’s a choice many in my shoes have also had to make.

The real question is how can I make myself stand out to potential employers?  It is important in today’s market to have an excellent resume and cover letter that really represents your character and work ethic while going above and beyond to promote your experience and skill set.  In the past these things might have been considered “sugar coating” your resume but today it shows your competencies before the interview and helps to give you a face before you even shake the interviewer’s hand.  Potential employers need to see that you fit the position available and after they read your resume and cover letter they need know what you will bring to the table and feel you are the “perfect fit.”

I have realized over the past sixteen months, the most important thing in finding the right job is networking.  There is no better way to find that perfect job opportunity than to know who the potential employers are in your area.  Even better if you are able to meet them personally or know them on a first name basis.  Professional organizations can help with this type of networking.  The local Sunday paper has a section that lists times and dates when various organizations meet and don’t forget about volunteer work to help with networking.  I have been lucky enough to meet and network with some very successful people through my retail job.  Unfortunately I have yet to find the right position, but I know that my dream job is right around the corner (or at least an entry level position that will lead to my dream job!)  I have my feelers out and several companies know I am ready and able to work when the right job comes along.  I realize it’s all about meeting the right person at the right time and just being in the back of an owner’s/interviewer’s mind when they have a position to fill.  So make sure you introduce yourself to as many people as you can and always follow-up with anyone that offers you a business card.  It just takes a five minute email or telephone call to change your life.

Trust me, I know it is not always easy to remain positive when you’re job hunting, but it is a necessity.  My advice is be confident, “beef up” your resume and cover letter and be selective as to where you apply because when you get a job, you want to make sure it’s an opportunity you can see yourself in for a while.  Good luck, stay strong and remember…this lull in the job market will pass.
